    • Certified copy of your National Senior/Matric Certificate qualification/certificate.

    • Proof from Universities South Africa (previously known as HESA) that you qualify for admission to degree studies at South African universities, if you are an international applicant. For more information, refer to the undergraduate prospectus.

    • An applicant who has studied at any other tertiary institution must, in addition, present certified copies of degree certificates, full academic record, proof of financial clearance, and a certificate of conduct from that institution.

A non-refundable application fee is payable to UKZN. Applicants need to take care to ensure that their application fee payment reaches UKZN on or before the closing date.

Entrance Requirements

Bachelor of Architecture Honours (144 Credits) Requirements

  • Candidates are eligible to apply if they have an undergraduate architecture qualification at NQF level 7 with:

    • A minimum 60% average across all modules.

    • A minimum 60% for Architectural Design and Theory of Architecture modules at exit level.

  • Candidates with an academic average between 50% and 60% need at least two years work experience in architecture before applying.

  • All applications must be supported with an Architectural Design Portfolio that:

    • Demonstrates critical thinking, design process, and technical abilities.

    • Includes selected projects showing research, design, technical resolution, documentation, and professional practice.

    • Is submitted electronically in A3 format, maximum 20 pages.

 

Part-Time Requirements

  • The part-time program allows working students to study while employed.

  • Applicants currently working must apply for the part-time program.

  • Part-time students must provide a letter of support from their employer confirming study leave and attendance allowances.

  • Courses require interaction and presentations during office hours; time away from work is needed.

  • Credit value indicates time commitment: for example, 32 credits = approximately 320 hours of study.

  • Part-time students outside Durban must attend in-person portfolio exams at the end of year 1 and year 2.

Important Notes

  • Full-time students must attend lectures on campus throughout the year.

  • Part-time students must visit campus at least twice annually and coordinate with employers for lecture attendance, either online or in-person.
